FRAGMENTS is an ongoing series that transforms fabrication off-cuts from stone yards into unique sculptural objects. EM collaborates with quarries and fabricators to salvage stone remnants and designs each piece around hand-picked materials with the intention to preserve the stone’s found condition and express their raw beauty. 

 

For the first edition, EM collaborated with American Soil and Stone, in Richmond, California. Damaso worked closely with the fabrication team and selected pieces of Winterset Limestone to create a series of objects pieces that showcase the as-found condition of the stone. Smooth surfaces, split edges, fabrication marks, and traces of extraction can be seen in one single object expressing its unique character and revealing the process of domestication of a natural material. 

 

The natural block act as a weighted base to a contrasting metal surface that hovers above the stone creating a physical overlap of nature and the human-made.
